Where Can I Meet a Luthier?

You wake up one day wanting one or more of these things:

I want a guitar that looks unique.

I want unusual electronics.

I want my name or logo built in.

I have some special wood.

Almost every entertainer wants more

control and more attention.

A cookie cutter guitar just won’t do.

The craftsmen that can deliver those things

have elevated themselves from guitar repair experts

to guitar builders. Now where can you meet a luthier?

“Online” is the modern answer for almost everything now.

In this case, I would not go that route.

I need to see the work up close.

I need to feel the finish.

I need to actually play something with my fingers on that neck.

I need to know the balance when it is strapped on.

After you rule out “on line,” the search is harder,

but this is important. It is worth the extra effort.

The answer can be found when you go to guitar shows.

You will meet several custom builders in most guitar shows.

Each luthier has a reason why he thinks his ideas are better.

See the list in the preceding paragraph.

You can match each issue with all the custom guitars you will see.

The added benefit is being able to talk to the builder.

You may have a guitar you already love that could use a little custom upgrade.

This is one of my favorite parts of guitar shows.

I like to look at all the guitars, but I really like talking to

the smart, cool people there.

I highly recommend the experience

and if you don’t buy anything, it is very cheap.

Here is a good list of shows across the USA:
