The whole world has seen his work. The entire planet has witnessed his craft. Dave is the Luthier that created Price’s Cloud guitar for Purple Rain.

That guitar was a statement that stuck in people’s minds. Would Price have been so memorable with a Strat or a Les Paul? I would argue that visuals were alway a huge part of Prince’s mystique.

So, 40 years ago, two guys from Minneapolis agreed on an outlandish guitar that screamed for attention.

Prince played the emotion out of it. Dave Rusan made the image of that emotion iconic.

It is so famous, they sell copies at the Minneapolis Airport.

Here’s a picture I personally took.

His name is Dave Rusan
His name is Dave Rusan

It is real. It plays. It is licensed to Schrecter. The airport version is hundreds of dollars. A hand-made version by Dave Rusan is about $8,000.

Three Cloud guitars were made to be played by Prince on tour.

The first cannot be had. It was given to The Smithsonian in 1993.

Every Guitar Has A Story loves luthiers.

Here is a high level work of art you might want to see:

It is happening this spring. The greatest guitar collection on earth is going to be sold at auction. Just to be specific, there will be guitars owned and played by Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Bo Diddley, Janis Joplin, David Gilmour, Sir Elton John, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Ringo Star and Kurt Cobain.

They all belonged to the late Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts.

Oddly, he never called himself the owner of these and other amazing historical objects. He always referred to himself as the steward of his billion dollar collection. He put them in traveling exhibits to share instead of dark vaults like Scrooge McDuck.

Much of the proceeds will go to his favorite charities.

Every Guitar Has A Story. These guitars are ready for their next chapter.

Just for fun, watch this episode featuring a rare and beautiful guitar:
